Week In Review

11/22/2019

This week we reviewed everything we learned since the start of the academic year. When we come back from Thanksgiving, we’ll be ready to learn all sorts of new things in Spanish.

Second graders finished working on vowels, days of the week, and months of the year. It was fun performing in pairs in front of the classroom on how would they introduce themselves to one another in Spanish! They all had a lot of fun and the comfort level they are starting to show in Spanish is truly coming through.

Kindergarteners reviewed all previous content as well. One new activity that we played is called "The Family Game," where they have to guess where the cheese is below the members of the family. Students would guess where the cheese is using the word in Spanish and Señorita would just check. We continued to sing our "Buenos Días" greetings and played the pom-pom game in which the teacher says a number and color. Students have to get as many pompoms as the number and the color that were said in Spanish, counting back in Spanish. It is a great game for working on numbers and colors and while focusing on proper pronunciation.  Please watch the video of this fun game as I am sure you will enjoy it!

This week second graders mastered vowels in Spanish. We worked on previously taught vowel sounds, matching  them with words in a matching game, in which students had to find  the vowel that matched with the vowel sound in a particular word. For example, casa would match with the vowel a. Students also worked on identifying written words and their corresponding pictures by listening to audible cues. Our cultural experience this week included learning about specific types of dancing in different regions of Spain. Students watched various videos about flamenco dancers and copied their movements.  They were encouraged to let go of their emotions and embrace the art as the flamenco dancers do.

Kindergarten students were experts with numbers this week. They enjoyed spending more time working on numbers through songs, games, and coloring. This foundation is critical as they continue to learn the Spanish language. They enjoyed coloring Javi’s fish and telling me how many there were in Spanish! The progress they are making is quite strong!

Spelling and Vowels

11/7/2019

This week, second grade worked on vowels and spelling in Spanish class. We enjoyed playing different games where we spelled words and said them aloud. Our words were rich on vowels that we previously studied last week, such as naranja and bebé. Technology was part of our game as we took pictures of our spelled words, matching pictures and recording ourselves saying the words. Students look forward to reviewing the numbers, which are full of vowels, next week!

Kindergarten worked on numbers this week. We explored how numbers are spelled, which we learned through various fun games and songs. One of the games was to find the match - each student received a card with one number or a word, and they had to find their match. For example 3 and tres. It was a lot of fun! We also look forward to learning our friend Mateo's routines by next week!

Winter Concert Song and Halloween

11/1/2019

This week, we’ve been working on the song “Dónde están las llaves.” This song is going to be performed by second grade at the Winter Concert and it is full of rich vocabulary. We learned what every word of the song means by playing different games, such as matching words with pictures and pronouncing words properly. We also practiced in the music room with Mrs. Smith playing the piano, which allowed the students to see how the song sounds with different tones. We look forward to mastering our vowels and singing the song perfectly very soon!

Kindergarten worked on Halloween vocabulary in Spanish, which is always accompanied by our best friends Pepita and Mateo who have different Spanish costumes. Students had a lot of fun coloring the different costumes and talking about the Halloween parade on Friday using vocabulary from our book. We look forward to learning more using numbers next week!
