El Coquí

1/31/2020

This week, second grade worked on how to express preferences in Spanish. In one practice game, “Cross to the Other Side,” students listened to each sentence that Señorita said while showing plastic food - for example, “me gustan las bananas” while showing bananas - and would cross over to the other side of the room if they agreed/would say the same. It was a great opportunity to spiral in other vocabulary from learning earlier this year.
In order to make vocabulary stronger, we did a class pool to learn more about classroom preferences (as you can see in the picture). Students wrote their preferences on the small board before showing and say it aloud. We found out that 2A doesn’t like cauliflower and 2S loves grilled cheese sandwiches!

Kindergarten was excited to sing our spring concert song, which talks about the Coquí - a small frog from Puerto Rico. One Coquí came to class all the way from Puerto Rico - he moves around the classroom at night and it’s always fun to see where he is the next day. In addition to learning the vocabulary of our song, students learned about Puerto Rico. They now know where Puerto Rico is on the map, some important places to visit, the flag - they even played their instruments! We look forward to knowing more about the song and getting ready for our concert.

Me Gusta Picasso

1/21/2020

This week, second graders learned how to express preferences by saying, I like it, I don’t like it, or I like it a lot! We also focused on learning about art and expressing those specific preferences in Spanish, while starting to familiarize ourselves with the vocabulary of shapes which we’ll work on in the future. We started with examples in art! We learned who Picasso was and expressed which of his art we liked better. The students enjoyed seeing and hearing about the Picasso museum in Barcelona, and learning new vocabulary that is associated with it such as artist, famous, born, and artwork. We analyzed some of Picasso’s artwork by seeing the number of geometrical shapes, which is how we tied in the new vocabulary lesson. We found circles and rectangles that were all said in Spanish! Señorita placed some of the most famous Picasso pieces around the classroom and the students had to move toward the one that “te gusta más”, which means that they liked it the most.

Kindergarteners worked in detail on emotions such as tired, good, bad, sick, sleepy etc. We sang and practiced additional emotions last week, which prepares us to further that learning in detail this week. We continued to dance and sing our songs that focus on these emotions, and then we moved to a fun activity where our well-known friends, Pepita, Javi, Olivia, and Mateo were sick, tired or sleepy. We then had to place a pon pon on the one that señorita said aloud which you can see in the video.

Namaste

1/10/2020

Happy New Year! We were all really excited to come back to school this week, which includes adjusting to the school schedule after a long break during which a lot of amazing things happened!

In order to address this adjustment period, which can include some levels of anxiety for students, we started the week practicing yoga using the Spanish language for different poses and executions. Both second grade and kindergarten replicated yoga positions, which they learned from observing a video of two children in action, and learned parts of the body such as feet, hand, leg, and arm. We also practiced greeting the sun and earth as well as various animal positions, which the students really enjoyed doing.

Now that we know a few yoga positions and proper Spanish pronunciation, students will be able to take a break as needed in class and go to our carpeted reading corner where they can take a yoga position card from our yoga basket and practice it in both vocabulary and physical execution. What a great combination! After this break, students can go back and engage in our Spanish lesson with a clearer mind and spirit.

After our yoga class, kindergarten learned about emotions. They danced and sang a new song where the focus was on different emotions and feelings such as happy, sad, scared, tired, and sleepy. We then played charades where we practiced those emotions by making facial expressions that the rest of the class had to guess in Spanish.

Second graders were introduced to our new "Diccionario en Español." Each student has his or her own individual dictionary where they write down words that they have learned in order to review and practice what we’ve done in the past. The goal is to create our own dictionaries by the end of the year.
